It is an act of love to nourish our body!

Food affects your energy level and how you feel daily. Sometimes we reach for food to comfort us, to find that ease and joy we are missing in our lives or to distract us. Sometimes we indulge in certain foods without regard of how we feel afterwards, looking for the pleasure in the moment.

There are better ways to deal with your emotions, calm your mind and boost your happiness than eating chocolate, cookies, or potato chips.

One of the lessons I’ve learned from doing yoga is how to listen to my body and understand its messages. I became more connected and responsive to what my body needs in the moment. I became curious about how my body functions and what it needs to function optimally. This inner connection helped me become aware of how my body responds to the food I eat.

My relationship with food completely changed. Through this process I learned to love food that loves me back. Food that supports me on my journey. Food that makes me feel happy, healthy, and light.

How to create a healthy relationship with food

What is good for you, it doesn’t always feel good. What you like, it doesn’t mean that your body likes.

Even though cookies or cakes taste good but that doesn’t mean that they are good for our bodies. The problem is that we eat most of the time with our minds and not with our bodies.

Our food choices are shaped by our culture, parents, beliefs, religion and society. If we paint a different picture in our heads of certain foods, we can easily change our eating habits. 

For example, when I have French fries in front of me, I see that fryer full of oil and I’m thinking “Oh I can’t have that oil in my body.” On the other hand, when I have broccoli in front of me, I’m thinking “I love broccoli because it has a beautiful color, it is crunchy and full of vitamin C, K, fibres…

I still eat pizza, cookies, or chocolate but I always choose healthier versions. I’m not anymore addicted to chocolate, I choose to eat 1-2 squares of chocolate when I want. And when I’m stressed, overwhelmed or anxious, in those moment when you just want to snack on cookies, I choose to practice meditation, write down my thoughts and feelings or go to nature.

In the beginning when you start eating with your body, the food doesn’t really taste good. But later when you feel benefits you start consciously choosing that food. As your taste buds change every two weeks you start liking new healthier food. Magic happens 🎇 you don’t like anymore donuts, French fries, twix bar, junk food. You don’t see anymore a donut as something delicious, but as fat and sugar that makes you feel lethargic.

One question that helped me change my relationship with food was, “What does my body want not my mind?” Our minds crave junk food, and our bodies crave nutritious, real food.

If you decide to make your diet heathier make sure you have a permanent motivation! You’re doing it for your body’s well-being not for the numbers on your scale or to look good in your bikini. Right reason creates right effort, the energy that keeps you going.

Here is a little challenge for you this week. Begin to notice how you feel after you eat certain foods. Which foods give you energy? Coach yourself to think differently about these foods by painting a different picture. Then see how you can incorporate more of these foods into your daily diet.
